the maine pOETRY express stops in searsport
On March 26th, 50 people caught the Poetry Express train for a
wonderful evening. Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair read from his
latest book, The Lost Child. Six Searsport residents (Harriet Clark,
Cassie Donald, Celine Kelley, Ted Kessler, AJ Koch, Jim Rose) did an
outstanding job reading poems they had chosen from anthologies
edited by McNair, and talking about what the poems meant to them. Tom McKeon served as conductor. A
great evening involving the community!
All four books are in the library's collection. Also of interest: a short story anthology and a collection of nonfiction writing about Maine, both edited by McNair. See our catalog for titles and availability. Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair

Erica Rubin Irish will be joining Carver Memorial Library in Searsport as its new Library Director. Irish brings with her a resume with impressive credentials and life experiences. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from Goddard College in 1996, a Master of Arts degree in U.S. Women’s History from Sarah Lawrence College in 2000, and an Master of Science degree in Library and Information Science from San Jose State University in 2007.
Irish’s previous library experience was as Director of the Monhegan Island library, where she was responsible for the complete range of services, including programming for all ages, building and maintaining a balanced collection, technology training and working with the community and school. She also updated the school library and taught French.
When she moved from Monhegan, Irish used her skills as a freelance writer and editor, and volunteered her time to nonprofit organizations. She maintained her library connection by serving on the Maine Library Association Scholarship and Loan Committee. Early work experiences were as photo and document processing archivist, and as an intern in Costume and Textiles Collection, which led her to be guest curator of a special online costume and textile exhibition for the Museum of the City of New York.
While she enjoyed these pursuits, her “true passion is for public library services and community outreach.” That passion is clearly evident in her work ethic and her excitement about being the Library Director of Carver Memorial Library.
Former Library Director Chase Colasante — who retired recently due to health concerns — for years reached out to the community and moved the library well into the 21st century. Chase will stay on for a period to enable a smooth transition.
On Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m. Irish will present a program to the Searsport Historical Society, which is held at Curtis Hall, next to the First Congregational Church. The presentation will include some of Irish's background, particularly her time as Library Director on Monhegan and her vision for future programs, events, initiatives and outreach at Carver Library.

technology anniversary
November, 2012, marks the one-year anniversary of a variety of technological improvements in library service at Carver. As a reminder to our patrons of what is now available to them, here are the highlights:
- The Apollo cloud-based library system that allows patrons to search the collection, place reserves, renew loans, link directly from the online catalog to downloadable audio books and ebooks, and otherwise manage their use of the library online.
- Six public access computers, including three laptops and a desktop that were added just over a year ago as a result of a grant.
- Free public Wi-Fi service. (We've had that for a number of years, but an updated router was put in place this past year.)
- The Public Library Information Commons, a collection of high quality online information resources related to job training, job seeking, health information, legal and government information, and technology literacy.
- Links to more about these services, among others offered by the Carver Memorial Library, can be found at:
Dream Big -- read!
The Library's summer reading program started June 18 and runs through August 31. It is open to children entering grades K - 6 in the Fall (or the home-school equivalent). Kits are available at the library. Participants place a sticker on their reading record for each 15 minutes spent reading. Once a week the participant shows the reading record to a librarian and gets a prize. At the end of the program the reading record is turned in and the child gets to select a book to keep.
Library Receives $2,300 Grant
Carver Memorial Library has been awarded a $2,300 grant from the Maine Community Foundation. The grant will fund a professionally-facilitated board development process designed to support the Carver Memorial Library Association in its work.
Since its founding in 1910, the library has been governed by a volunteer board of trustees. Much has changed in the past century. Today Carver Memorial is a full-service library and a vital community center, with library use increasing almost 250% over the past ten years. It offers an
excellent print collection for a library of its size, as well as membership in the Maine InfoNet Download Library of e-books and audiobooks. The library has an online catalog with account access for patrons, six public Internet computers and a public Wi-Fi hotspot. spring tea a success!
The Carver Memorial Library Association held its tenth annual Spring Tea on May 6. It was a huge success. A library full of convivial guests enjoyed robust tea, delectable food, and beautiful harp music.
The trustees thank Angler's Restaurant, Anna Kessler, Kendra Newcombe, and McCormack Economy for their contributions of food; Jean Goldfine for her mellifluous harp music; and Joan Andrews and David Johnson for the beautiful flowers.
A special thanks to our guests for supporting the library. We hope to see you at next year's tea.
