Volunteer

Be a Carver Memorial Library Volunteer!

Volunteering is a great way to meet new friends and neighbors, learn new skills, bolster your resume, and feel good about contributing to the community.  With your help our library can do more and make a bigger difference in the lives of those around us. Special programs, speakers, and projects around the library happen thanks to the work of our volunteers.

Interested in volunteering? Check out the list of opportunities below. When you see an opportunity you like, simply complete a Volunteer Interest Form and return it to the library. Please note that all volunteers must be 18 years of age, unless granted special permission by the library. We look forward to hearing from you!

Questions about volunteering? Please call 207-548-2303 or email staff@carverlibrary.com for more information.

Opportunities

All positions are currently available, unless noted otherwise.

Staff Substitute
We keep a list of subs who may be available when one of the regular staff is out on vacation, sick leave, or at a training, etc. Subs help with shelving, front desk, and being a second person so that staff are not working alone. Are you good with people and attention to detail? Have any availability during the week? Please let us know! Great for a part-time library person to pick up some more hours or a semi-retired one to keep their hand in. This can be paid at a small hourly rate or can be a volunteer.
Time commitment: As needed, possibly one or two days a month or a few in a row. We ask for a year+ commitment.

Library Buddy
Act as a second person to the library staff but simply be present if needed while doing their own thing, or working on other volunteer projects, rather than learning the full front desk procedures.
Time commitment: As needed. As needed, possibly one or two days a month or a few in a row. We ask for a 6-month commitment.

Shelving and Shelf Readers
Adopt a section, shelve books, and keep things tidy. Do you love picture books? Or kids' nonfiction? Get to know your library on a whole new level!
Time commitment: 30 minutes-2 hours per week

Archiving
Make our historical files and clippings organized, easy to access, and stored safely for the long term. Experience required.
Time commitment: 1-3 hours per week. We ask for a 6-month commitment.

Furniture Moving and Fix-it
Every so often we have some rearranging to do, and we could use some strong hands to get it done. We also have tiny repairs that need skilled hands with a spare moment.
Time commitment: 30 minutes-2 hours per project, as needed

Tech Tutor
Are you a people person who's competent at technology? We would love to host a tech tutor to help people get comfortable with their phones, tablets, email, etc.
Time commitment: Drop-in hours or by-request schedule. We ask for a 6-month commitment.

Poster Person
Take copies of posters around town once or twice a month to spread the word about our events.
Time commitment: 30 min-2 hours once a month.

Other Jobs: Miscellaneous Volunteer Support
Sometimes things come up and we could use a little extra help. This could be anything from collating files to crafting useful items for our children’s library.
Time commitment: 30 min-2 hours per project, as needed.

Landscaping/Garden Committee

We have a beautiful location with lots of potential. Are you interested in planning, planting, or garden maintenance?
Time commitment: As needed, or 1-3 hours per month.

Fundraising & Events

Events & Program Planner
Perhaps there's an event or program you'd like to see at the library, like an author visit, speaker, or service. Are you interested in organizing or hosting?
Time commitment: As needed, plus event

Fundraising Planner/Library Friend
Help plan and organize our calendar of fundraising events. Work on one or two favorites or planning for the year.
Current annual fundraisers include the Garden Party and Chefs Showcase (June), Craft Stash Sale (September) and Gift Basket Silent Auction (November-December)

Time commitment: 1-3 hours per month for planning, plus time on individual events

Fundraising & Events Crew
Maybe you're not a planning person, but can take on a specific task or two for one of our events. We always need lots of day-of crew and preparation people.
Time commitment: As needed per task, generally 1-6 hours beforehand and/or 1-6 hours during the event.

We welcome your support--thank you!
